Captain Andrew Cook appointed secretary general designate of IFSMA

7 August 2025

Nautilus is congratulating Captain Andrew Cook FNI on his appointment as secretary general designate of the International Federation of Shipmasters’ Associations (IFSMA). He will succeed Commodore Jim Scorer FNI RN, who retires at the end of 2025.

Captain Cook is a former ship master with extensive experience in global ship operations, crew welfare and maritime safety. He is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and has served on the INTERTANKO Human Element Committee, contributing to industry wide efforts to improve working condition at sea.

His term formally begins on 1 September 2025. Until the end of the year, Captain Cook will work alongside Commodore Scorer to prepare for leading IFSMA's delegation at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other international forums starting January 2026. IFSMA has consultative NGO status at IMO, giving shipmasters a seat at the table in shaping global maritime regulation.

David Appleton, head of professional and technical at Nautilus International, said: ‘IFSMA plays a vital role in fighting for safe operational practices that protect the lives and health of our members and other maritime professionals. We extend our congratulations to Captain Cook and wish him the best in his new role as secretary general.’
