As an LGBT+ professional, have you ever feared for your safety in the workplace? If so, a major new study wants to hear from you.
Despite legal progress in many countries, LGBT+ people – particularly trans and intersex individuals – still face daily harassment, hate crimes and discrimination. Much of this happens in public spaces and at the workplace: spaces where everyone should feel safe.
Verbal abuse and harassment remain routine experiences for many LGBT+ workers, while too many employers fail to act or are complicit in discriminatory practices. This is a clear violation of their national duty to uphold equal treatment in employment and occupation.
To address this, the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) has launched a campaign called Be Proud, Be Safe, Be Organised. This includes an online questionnaire to gather union members' views and experiences and find out what union activism is needed to make a better work environment for European LGBT+ employees in all transport sectors.
The questionnaire was developed by the ETF Youth Committee following a mandate given by the 2022 Budapest Congress.
As an affiliate union of the ETF, Nautilus is keen to make sure maritime is well-represented in the survey, so members are strongly encouraged to contribute.
- To take part, go to the survey page on the ETF website and select the maritime sector box. The deadline for completing the survey is 30 September 2025.
