HCMM welcomes latest cohort to chartership scheme

16 September 2021

The Honourable Company of Master Mariners (HCMM) has welcomed its latest cohort of chartered master mariners at a ceremony aboard the HQS Wellington during London International Shipping Week.

The second annual awards and alumni event recognised master mariners who attended in person and virtually from around the world.

In a welcome address HCMM chairman Commodore Duncan Lamb acknowledged the importance of the pursuit of excellence among the seagoing industry's highest ranks.

'This chartership scheme acknowledges all those master mariners and naval officers who go above and beyond their daily routine to give back to the industry, whether in philanthropy, professional bodies, education and mentoring or providing leadership within the profession and the industry,' he said.

Bernadette Kelly, Permanent Secretary at the Department for Transport, recognised the chartership as a hallmark of excellence within the industry.

'Mariners conduct their business in a very pressured environment where there's little margin for error and where professionalism is absolutely the trademark of their work. This has always been the preserve of a particular type of people, people with real commitment, with leadership and of course, great technical skill and subject to demanding training and examination.

'Because of the high regard in which it is held, this award represents a hallmark of excellence and will have a positive impact for the reputation for the maritime sector.'

The HCMM chartership scheme was launched in 2017 in association with the Nautical Institute.
