'He built a truly international union': Sascha Meijer pays tribute to Mark Dickinson

30 April 2026

Incoming Nautilus International general secretary Sascha Meijer paid a heartfelt tribute to her predecessor Mark Dickinson at a farewell dinner in April 2026, celebrating a tenure that transformed the Union into a truly global force.

Mr Dickinson spent 26 years at Nautilus International, nearly 17 of which as general secretary. Under his leadership, the Union grew into what Ms Meijer described as 'the only truly international trade union, active in three countries', a leading affiliate of both the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF), and the driving force behind the Nautilus Federation.

Ms Meijer highlighted Mr Dickinson's deep commitment to international cooperation as one of his defining qualities. 'You have always believed deeply in international cooperation – not as a slogan, but as a daily practice,' she said. 'You are prepared to face cultural differences head-on and to keep building bridges even when it would be easier to retreat into the familiar and the national.'

She credited that mindset with shaping her own approach as she steps into the role. 'I have learned a great deal from watching how you work internationally, how you listen, how you navigate differences, and how you always keep the long-term picture firmly in view.'

She thanked Mr Dickinson for the care he took in preparing her for the top job. 'You are not just stepping aside, you have actively put me in a position to succeed. That trust means a great deal to me. I will never forget that.'

On behalf of the council, staff and members, Ms Meijer toasted 'a great leader and fantastic General Secretary, a generous colleague and a true friend'.
