Lloyd's Register urged to drop its anti-union stance in the Netherlands

17 January 2024

On Thursday 18 January at 12:00 hrs Nautilus International members from Lloyd's Register's Rotterdam office will present a petition signed by 90 employees to chief executive Nick Brown at its head office 71 Fenchurch St London asking the company to stop ignoring the reasonable request of their staff to recognise the union, and commit to pay rises in line with inflation.

Lloyd's Register, a provider of maritime classification and compliance services, has been urged to drop its anti-union stance in the Netherlands and recognise Nautilus International as requested by its workforce.

The limited company, wholly owned by Lloyd's Register Foundation – a charitable trust – has repeatedly refused to recognise Nautilus International as the union representing staff for negotiations on pay and conditions of employees in the Netherlands.

Nautilus International represents a significant percentage of staff members at Lloyd's Register in the Netherlands who are asking for pay rises ('wage repair') in line with inflation, having faced significant real terms pay cuts over the last two years.

Clear majority of employees want a CBA

More than 80% of the Lloyd's Register Dutch workforce has indicated that they want Nautilus International to negotiate a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for them.

Lloyd's Register management has consistently refused to recognise the staff union and instead has announced a reorganisation that will replace good jobs in the Netherlands for bad jobs by hiring people from cheap labour countries.
