Nautilus pays respects on anniversary of Herald of Free Enterprise disaster

6 March 2026

Nautilus International was represented today at the 39th anniversary service for the loss of the ferry MS Herald of Free Enterprise.

The service, held in Dover on 6 March 2026 and conducted by the Dover port chaplains, was attended by Nautilus head of industrial Micky Smyth and membership & research administrator Samantha Udall.

Every year, the Union pays its respects to those who lost their lives in the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster, when the roll-on/roll-off ferry capsized shortly after departing the Belgian port of Zeebrugge bound for Dover. The service also honours the many acts of individual heroism by crew and passengers who gave their lives so that others might live.

In the aftermath of the disaster, important safety procedures governing ferry operations were introduced, helping to ensure such a tragedy is not repeated.
