Prime services for yacht members

19 May 2025

Two of the most popular benefits the Union offers yacht crew are the Nautilus Sea Service Record and the Nautilus 24/7 round-the-clock helpline. Rob Coston outlines how these services can work for you

Nautilus has long provided a sea time verification service accredited by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency, and this is a major attraction of Union membership for yacht crew.

Now the verification service is available digitally through Nautilus SSR, an online platform which allows Nautilus members to log their sea time quickly, securely and efficiently. Users record, calculate and review qualifying sea service for certification, all within one simple-to-use and completely digital tool.

Seafarers are given the choice between using the new digital process and the old manual process, but most are glad to say goodbye to the slower system involving sending documents in the post. You can find out how to switch to Nautilus SSR in our yacht hub www.nautilusint.org/yachts

Are you a sea time authoriser?

With the take-up of Nautilus SSR rapidly increasing, we are keen for captains to give the tool a try as it makes the whole process much easier for everyone involved.

There is a short registration process, and even non-members can sign up to become an authoriser. Of course, if you are a member you can also use the tool to verify your own sea time. To sign up, visit www.nautilusssr.com

Hitting the spot for yacht crew

The 2024 figures for Nautilus 24/7, Nautilus International's round the clock support service for members, show that yacht crew were more likely than any other maritime professionals to seek the Union’s emergency assistance.

Yacht crew accounted for 76.5% of all calls to the emergency helpline. Of the 521 new cases, 189 were from yacht crew. Nearly 67% of all marine incidents reported to the helpline were also raised by yacht crew.

The most reported issues raised by yacht crew were:

  • unfair dismissal
  • issues related to wages/salary payment
  • repatriation
  • abuse, bullying, harassment, discrimination and/or violence

The Nautilus 24/7 service, which was set up in 2014, is available at any time using various contact methods – including global free-of-charge calls, live chat, and emails.

Nautilus 24/7

As a helpline for Nautilus members at the Union's branches in the UK, Netherlands and Switzerland, the Nautilus 24/7 service is for members needing emergency after hours help. Nautilus 24/7 does not replace the normal office hours service provided by Union staff and officials in those branches, and it does not provide legal advice. Call staff are also able to live chat to members, transfer members, or forward emails to the Union's branch offices during a European or UK working day, or liaise on the member's behalf with the appropriate Union department to progress issues outside office hours.

For non-urgent matters members should email the relevant departments listed on the N24/7 page.
