Nautilus member and a Bevis Minter Award winner Charlie Schofield carried the Merchant Navy standard at the Annual National Service for Seafarers (ANSS), which returned to St Paul's Cathedral after a two-year pandemic hiatus.
The ANSS service – normally held annually and hosted by The Seafarers' Charity – returned this year after previous cancellations due to Covid-19 restrictions. Bevis Minter Award recipients are traditionally invited to attend the service. Mr Schofield was accompanied this year by two Nautilus officials, assistant general secretary Olu Tunde and head of professional and technical David Appleton.

The service was first held in 1905 and 117 years later continues to reflect and celebrate the full range of UK maritime activities. Representatives attend from the Royal and Merchant Navies, the commercial world, shipping companies, mission and philanthropic societies, schools and museums, veterans' associations, labour unions, youth and leisure organisations. The general public is also welcome to attend.
Mr Schofield, who was an HND marine engineering cadet, was selected for the Union's Bevis Minter Award in 2021. It is presented each year to a Merchant Navy cadet who has shown exceptional fortitude in overcoming difficulties during their study. The award for trainee maritime officers in the UK and Ireland was given a boost last year through a new collaboration with Maritime UK's annual awards programme.
