'Ships Salute' for Queen's Platinum Jubilee

27 May 2022

Merchant Navy vessels in the UK are preparing to join in a special nationwide 'Ships Salute' for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Every UK harbour is encouraged to join in at 12:00 BST on Saturday 4 June 2022, as part of the special long holiday weekend celebrations.

During the salute every vessel in a harbour taking part sounds a simultaneous long loud blast on their horn or whistle at an agreed moment.

So far ferries and other passenger/cargo vessels from Scotland to the Isle of Scilly have indicated to Maritime UK they will be participating, but every vessel – regardless of size, class and category – is invited.

A fly-past has also been organised by Hovertravel Ltd, which will fly its union flag-liveried hovercraft during a 70-mile trip around the Solent on Friday 3 June.

Ships from the Royal Navy at all major ports around the country are also expected to take part.

Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps said: 'As a proud maritime nation, where the name of Her Majesty has graced not only cruise liners but also the largest ship in the Royal Navy fleet, we really want the maritime sector to show support with Merchant, Naval and leisure vessels alike marking the Jubilee with a synchronised "salute" from their horn.'

UK Chamber of Shipping CEO Sarah Treseder said: 'The Ships Salute is a fitting way for the maritime sector to join the weekend of public celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The salute is both simple and universal and we hope as many people as possible get involved.'
