Nautilus members employed by UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) on ships operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have voted to accept a very significant uplift to their pay of between 15.6% and 37.5%, depending on rank.
This increase follows a sustained period of engagement by Nautilus on the issue of seafarer pay. The Union has consistently raised concerns about pay competitiveness, progression and fairness, which led to a comprehensive review undertaken by UKRI examining benchmarking, recruitment, retention and agency costs. The review led to an extra £555,000 being assigned to the seafarer pay budget, enabling meaningful improvements within the limits of the Civil Service Pay Remit.
Nautilus strategic organiser John Coppell said: 'This is an excellent offer that was overwhelmingly accepted by Nautilus members. The deal has been many years in the making and represents the culmination of our sustained and collective efforts.
'The outcome would not have been achieved without continued persistence, negotiation, and tireless work; the contributions of our liaison officer; and our members' continued support and unity. This deal stands as the culmination of our shared determination. I want to sincerely thank members for their backing throughout this process, as reaching this point has not been straightforward. I hope this result reaffirms the true value of trade union membership, and the strength that comes from standing together under the Nautilus International banner.'
