UK maritime conference to explore net zero, society and the sea

12 August 2024

Sustainable practices for green shipping, alternative fuels and future technology will be explored along with a new charter pledging the industry to fair treatment, during a two-day conference in London in September 2024.

Hosted by National Maritime, in partnership with the University of Greenwich, the 4th Society & the Sea International Conference 2024 will take place from 9 to 10 September in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich. Conference delegates will also be invited to contribute to a new SOCSEA Charter 2024 pledging a 'fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable approach to working in the blue economy'.

Chief executive of National Maritime Peter Green,  said: 'We hope the conference supports our aims to increase economic growth in the maritime sector through collaborations and also encourages the sustainable clean-up of the sector by championing green initiatives. A prosperous and green shipping industry will contribute to a blue economy and as we say, a greener industry is equal to a blue economy.'

Conference delegates will hear from those in leadership positions making progress on net-zero who are finding ways to effectively address the biodiversity crisis while adapting to the evolving set of global regulations. Special guests include experts working on alternative marine fuels, vessel decarbonisation, new technology pathways and energy solutions. Other topics include new technologies, safety and regulations.

A Grand Maritime Ball to fundraise in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's 200th anniversary will be held for 350 guests on board the Woods Fleet vessel, the Silver Sturgeon, on the River Thames at Greenwich Pier on the evening of 9 September.

Created 17 years ago, the National Maritime is a maritime network of small and medium business enterprises in the UK, with 73% of its partnerships coming from the shipbuilding and ship repair, marine engineering, ports, and logistics industries.
