Unions urged to support 'once in a lifetime' employment bill

3 July 2025

Employment expert Professor Melanie Simms has highlighted significant opportunities for workers within the UK government's Employment Rights Bill, and stressed the need for positive engagement from unions as the Bill makes its way through parliament.

Speaking to trade union representatives at the recent Unions21 annual general meeting, Prof Simms emphasised that the Bill contains crucial provisions that could substantially improve working conditions for workers, including seafarers.

Highlights include potential regulations around zero-hours contracts, enhanced statutory sick pay, and improved workforce access rights for trade unions.

Prof Simms stressed the importance of collective bargaining and the potential benefits of fair pay agreements for low-paid workers, particularly in adult social care.

She urged unions to take a proactive, strategic approach to implementing these changes.

'This bill isn't just paperwork,' Simms explained. 'It's a once in a lifetime chance to reshape how we protect and support workers across multiple sectors, including maritime.'

The Bill's two-year implementation timeline offers Nautilus a critical window to shape policy interpretations and ensure maximum benefit for members.

Professor Simms is from Glasgow University and is a key speaker at the Nautilus International UK Branch Conference in November. Members can register to attend here.
