Yacht sector youth ambassadors announced by training charity

10 October 2023

UK maritime training charity UKSA launched a youth ambassador service on World Mental Health Day to help motivate and support other young people training in the yacht sector.

Based on the Isle of Wight, UKSA counts many Nautilus members among its trainees. The four new youth ambassadors are: Harrison Alvey, who is currently undertaking a Superyacht Cadetship; Lottie Butchers, who is in her second year of the Maritime Foundation Programme; Henry Griffiths, who is currently in his second year of an NCFE (Level 3 Diploma) in sport and physical activity; and Badr Ahmed Badr, who recently completed the charity’s Sea.Change Foundation Programme.

UKSA safeguarding and welfare manager Kim Fry said: 'One of the areas which the youth ambassadors will be responsible for is offering peer to peer support to other young people and starting those conversations about mental health and wellbeing, which is often easier with someone your own age.'

Cadetship Youth Ambassador Harrison Alvey has a background in event management, coaching and psychiatry and is currently pursuing a Yachtmaster certification with the aim becoming a superyacht captain.

As a master he said he would aim to champion an 'inclusive culture of empathy, resilience, and sustainability. In this role, I aim to inspire individuals to prioritise their mental health while performing at their best. Embracing positive actions for ourselves and others, even in small steps, can yield profound improvements in overall wellbeing'.

Education Youth Ambassador Henry Pizarro Griffiths who also wants to become a superyacht master, said he became inspired to become a youth ambassador after undertaking a 'taster' diploma at UKSA.

In addition to supporting their peers with mental health challenges, the ambassadors will contribute to initiatives relating to education and careers, diversity and sustainability.
