      New bungalows for 'veteran' seafarers at Mariners' Park

      Retired Merchant Navy seafarers who have been caught up in global conflict can now benefit from two new bungalows built for 'veteran' mariners at the Nautilus Welfare Fund's Mariners' Park in Wallasey.

      The two-bedroomed bungalows - which each comprise a lounge, fitted kitchen, fully tiled wetroom, gas central heading and a garden - are now available, and in January 2019 two further two-bedroomed apartments will also be ready. 

      The four units of accommodation were built specifically for veteran mariners and their dependants after a partnership between the charity and Seafarers UK secured financial support from the Aged Veterans' Fund.

      In 2015 the UK government signalled that members of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and merchant mariners who served on civilian vessels whilst supporting HM Forces were recognised as 'veterans' and could now benefit from the Veterans' Covenant.

      Nautilus welfare manager, Mick Howarth commented: 'This was a very welcome change and enabled a successful application for funding. Many mariners do not recognise themselves as "veterans" as often their support of the armed forces was for a brief period in their maritime career.' 

      Veterans include those involved in World War II, Suez, Palestine, Aden, Burma, Korea, Malaya, the Gulf, Iraq, Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone. We would be delighted to hear from any such veteran who might wish to be considered for the bungalows or the apartments when they are available in the New Year.'
